THE BUSINESS OF TRYING TO KEEP ROTHERHAM “UNITED”.

By Giles H Brearley and Gavin J Mackinder.

When Rotherham United went into Administration in 2006 no one came forth to save the club. The Town’s proud 100 year history of League football was about to end.  Two fans in desperation hurriedly formed a consortium to take over and save the club. Denis Coleman  and fellow supporter  Dino Maccio started doing the rounds and they secured funding to start the new season .Denis as the new chairman of the board of directors approached Chartered Management Accountant Giles Brearley to join them on the board to help steer the club to a more certain future.

This roller coaster financial task was undertaken for the next 2 years by Giles and his fellow business partner Gavin. This book ,jointly written, unfurls the complexities of the real grass roots business of operating a football league club. Virtually every problem you could envisage materialised and had to be dealt with. It was a constant battle.

The story includes hoax inheritances, unprecented financial claims from years ago, a lease from hell, the sale of 2 players for £1-1 million, a manager to remove , a new manager appointment , Squad sizes and budgets, Fights, fundraising  ,other league club problems.

The book also examines the finances of all the other Division two  clubs comparing them against each other. There is also details of Matchday antics which give a great insight into the escapades at the the many games played both at home and up and down the country.

Whilst active on the club’s business many things had to be kept confidential and from the ever “knowledge seeking” fan base. This book will now fill in many of the greatly speculated upon  parts of the Rotherham United story and give insight into what happens in the backroom corridors of football.

With 300 pages containing 48 chapters with titles like “You can tell Neil Warnock’s gone” ,  “The Americans are coming”  “ Don Valley or bust”, “Accrington Stanley- who are they?” and “Robbo the silent one”  is a very entertaining read and a must for anyone interested in the world of football . The book is also well illustrated with many personal photos taken by Giles during his two seasons of office.
